Classification of Coating Machines

The emergence of air calendering machines in the 1930s marked the birth of the modern paper coating industry. The air knife coater quickly became popular as it overcame the shortcomings of brush coaters, leading to a dramatic increase in the production of coated paper.
Brush type
The brush coater is the oldest coating equipment, first used in the 1850s for applying ceramic paint to wallpaper. There are three types of brush coating heads: round brush coating head, carpet roller coating head, and blanket cover coating head. Figure 1 shows the brush coating head used in early applications.
Air knife

Blade
Blade coater
In the 1950s, the first patent for blade coaters appeared. Since then, the technology for blade coaters has developed rapidly. Depending on the material equipment, blade type, and blade installation position, blade coating heads can be classified into various types, including hard blade coaters, draft blade coaters, soft blade coaters, fractional supply blade coaters, short residence blade coaters, bill blade coaters, and blade roller coaters.
Roller type
Roller coating involves applying paint to the coating roller, and this type of coater is predominant in the machine. The coating amount can be adjusted by measuring the pressure between the rollers; as the pressure increases, the amount of paint passing through decreases, which also reduces the coating amount. Types of roller coaters include:
1. Pressure roller coating head
2. Reverse roller coating head
3. Conveyor roller coating head
4. Gravure roller coating head
Spray coater
Spray coating technology is a non-contact coating method that can use controllable high-pressure spraying technology to apply single-sided or double-sided coatings (sizing) on paper or cardboard.
Curtain coating
Multi-layer curtain coating machines can impart a three-layer structure (floor, absorption layer, and top layer) to the surface of inkjet printing paper in a single coating operation.
An uneven paper surface can achieve a uniform coating.
Slot coating
The slot coating head includes a coating liquid storage tank. It is used to pump the coating liquid from the storage tank to the nozzle through supply pipelines. It includes control parts for detecting the operation of the pump and nozzle, pressure detection parts, and pipeline pressure. When the pressure reaches the predetermined conditions, the coating liquid is expelled from the nozzle.
