Pig Fat

"Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang" (Jin? Ge Hong)
[Formulation]
Shenhuang ointment, treats various sores, head sores, and miscellaneous sores. Huanglian, Huangbai, Fuzhu, Xionghuang, Mercury, Lilu each one tael, Hufen two taels, seven ingredients finely sifted, mix with one pound of pig fat in the twelfth lunar month, and seal tightly in a container. Steam five dou of rice, remove the cooked rice, add mercury, and grind again to mix, then store it tightly. For any sores, first wash with salt water, then apply, and none will fail to heal.

Traditional Chinese medicine ointments often use pig fat (i.e., lard) and other animal fats as excipients. The "Bie Lu" states that "pig fat is the main ingredient for preparing various ointments" (excipient);
Pig fat has a sweet and cool flavor, "can soothe the skin, make hand ointments, and prevent cracking" (Tao Hongjing), "benefits blood vessels, relieves wind heat, and moistens the lungs" ("Ben Cao Tu Jing") (medicine).

Bai Ji, Milk

"Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang" (Northern Song? Wang Huaiyin et al.)
[Formulation]
Bai Ji0.3Ke, Xixin0.3Ke, Fangfeng0.3Ke (remove the root), Baitzi Ren0.3Ke. Grind the above medicines finely and sift them into a powder. Mix with milk and apply to the child's skull, twice a day.

Bai Ji has the effect of astringing and stopping bleeding, reducing swelling and promoting tissue regeneration (medicine). It contains Bai Ji polysaccharides, which become sticky when encountering water, making it suitable for application to the affected area (excipient).
Milk has a sweet and neutral flavor, can nourish blood and moisten dryness, and modern research has found it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects (medicine), while also acting as a wetting agent to give Bai Ji its stickiness (excipient).

Fresh Licorice Juice

"Dan Xi Zhi Fa Xin Yao" (Yuan? Zhu Danxi)

For external kidney swelling and scrotal sores, apply earthworm powder mixed with juice. If the sac is swollen, use Mutong, Licorice, Huanglian, Danggui, and Huangqin, decoct and take orally. Another formula, mix powdered perilla leaves with water for application, wrap with lotus leaves, for scrotal swelling and pain, mix fresh licorice juice with earthworm feces, and apply gently.

Vinegar

Sore throat and tongue. Mix Wu Zhu Yu powder with vinegar and apply to the soles of the feet, healing overnight, as it helps to draw heat down.
[Notes]
Vinegar, also known as bitter wine, is warm in nature and has a sour and bitter taste. The "Bie Lu" records that it can "dissolve abscesses, disperse water qi, and kill evil toxins" (medicine). Here, vinegar not only helps in adhering Wu Zhu Yu powder but also aids in the release of the effective components of Wu Zhu Yu alkaloids (excipient).
